It splits the recipe list assuming each line is a separate ingredient and recognizes that a number at the start of a line represents a quantity. Paprika makes some nice processing assumptions when you manually specify a recipe to save. Once you have selected and added all the elements of a recipe (ingredients, name, directions, servings, prep etc) your recipe record is complete. You simply highlight a part of the recipe (the ingredient list for example) and then click the relevant link at the bottom of the window (Ingredients for example), this will save the highlighted text in a new recipe entry. This is not as arduous a task as it may sound. This means that you will have to manually enter the recipe. If Paprika doesn’t recognize the recipe on the page and cannot automatically import it for you the message “Unable to process site” will pop up. If you are viewing a recipe on a website that Paprika recommends then you can simply navigate in the browser to the recipe of interest and then press the Save Recipe button at the bottom right of the application window.

Pro Tip : Bookmark the initial webpage, the one that has the Getting Started guide and list of recipe sources as soon as you start the browser, you will be going back there a lot! Where is the Home button ? Then I noticed the Bookmarks menu and realized I could bookmark the starting page just as I would in a standard web browser. Side Note : One thing I found a little annoying was that in order to return to the initial page in the browser, the page with the list of Paprika supported recipe sources I had to use the back button and retrace my steps back. I guess my recipe browsing is just too predictable. But when I tried saving the recipe in Paprika the app was able to automatically extract all the recipe information from the webpage.

In order to test out the manual importation process I headed over to the Serious Eats website and selected a recipe. It’s possible to grab recipes from sites other than those listed by Paprika but to do so requires some manual intervention. These sources include BBC Food, The Food Network, a number of celebrity chef sites and others. Although you can enter any web address, you are given a list of recipe sources that Paprika is able to automatically import from. When you click on the Browser menu option on the left side of the application a web browser is brought up on the right side. Capturing Recipes from the WebĪ special feature of Paprika is the ability to easily nab recipes on the web and bring them into your Paprika library. The help page (a well laid out single web page) explains that Paprika can import recipes from MasterCook, MealMaster, Living Cookbook and a custom YAML format. This is interesting because Paprika contains a web browser within itself that can be used to grad recipes from the web but the help page is opened in a standard browser window. The Help -> Paprika Help menu open opens up the Paprika help web page in a browser. I was surprised that no tutorial video or getting started information was presented but I suppose that if the app is easy enough to use then they aren’t necessary. Starting the app for the first time I was greeted with the window pictured below Paprika First Open Screen The Paprika installer created a Start Menu entry and a desktop icon for the app. Also on the final screen there was no option to automatically launch the application. I note that it defaulted to only installing for the current user, not all accounts on the machine. The website is clear with lots of white space, a nice start.

Installationįinding and downloading the PC trial from was straightforward. On with the review, let’s see what it has to offer. Others on this forum have already listed features that I would also enjoy, so I won't list them all here.Paprika is a recipe management app that has gained significant buzz in 2014/2015.Įase of use seems to be it’s main attraction. I imagine users that have been around for a while have slogged it through listing each favourite recipe by line-item have now got a sunk cost, so they're probably going to stick around regardless. But I think that as a new user, we are more likely going to be in need of such an integration, as it will determine whether we stick around and get the premium account or not. I am new to Cronometer, so I'm not sure if my petition will make much difference. It seems like we can do neither, and requests for the first have had a 'coming soon!' response for the past four years, and the later has had no response. I realise that for the last four years you've had the Cronometer community requesting integration with a recipe app (Paprika, etc), or, failing that, being able to import externally produced JSON files.
